History of Southern Appalachian Dance

Phil Jamison’s “History of Southern Appalachian Dance” Sunday March 10

The Arts Council presents nationally-known author, scholar, flatfoot dancer, and old-time musician Phil Jamison in a program on the history of Southern Appalachian Dance on Sunday March 10 at 3:00 in the Macon County Public Library Meeting Room.

Jamison is a Blue Ridge Music Hall of Fame and America’s Clogging Hall of Fame inductee, having danced with the Green Grass Cloggers for 40 years and performed and taught at music festivals and dance events across the U.S. and overseas.  One of the country’s leading scholars of traditional Appalachian dance, his 2015 book, Hoedowns, Reels, and Frolics: Roots and Branches of Southern Appalachian Dance, tells the story behind the square dances, step dances, reels, and other forms of dance practiced in southern Appalachia, from their European, African American, and Native American roots to the present day.  He teaches traditional music and dance at Warren Wilson College.  Learn more about Jamison’s book and career at www.philjamison.com.
