The 8th Annual Mountain High BBQ Competition & Car Show was this past weekend here in Franklin and it was a great weekend of competition, cars, and of course, tasty BBQ! The attendance for the event is estimated between 3,500 and 4,000.
It brought teams from all over the southeast and beyond, with almost 50 teams competing in the Pro & Backyard categories, respectively. In addition to the KCBS BBQ competition, there were close to 100 entrants in the Car Show, and the Asheville based Emporium Band entertained the crowd with their renditions of timeless hits.
Here are the results from the BBQ Competition
The Tastin’ Tent Winner was team Bar-B-Q 101 from Lake City, TN – Cup # 14. They were awarded “Franklin’s Finest”
We would like to express our great thanks and appreciation to Bi-Lo for donating the Boston Butts for this competition.
Folks enjoyed walking through a field of nearly 100 car entries including antique, classic and late models. We appreciate the Southwestern Community College’s Automotive Club for sponsoring and running this year’s show. Winners of the car show are as follows:
People’s Choice Winner – Dave Finn – 1944 Willis Overland
2nd place People’s Choice – Homer Holbrooks – 1955 Chevrolet Belair
Kid’s Choice – #37 – Mike Hundley – 2012 Chevy Camaro
As folks entered the festival, they were given a raffle ticket for a $600 Lagoona Grill, donated by Macon Appliance Mart. Carol Lansley was the winner and was thrilled. Raffle tickets for a Big Green Egg Smoker have been on sale for the last couple of months. This smoker was donated by Big Green Egg & Appalachian Ace Hardware and was valued at $1,600.
The Franklin Chamber of Commerce’s staff and board of directors want to thank everyone who came out to support the festival as well as those who volunteered their time and sponsorship support. “We have such a great group of local businesses who have sponsored this festival from the very beginning” said Cindy Cavender, of the Franklin Chamber. “ This year our presenting sponsor was Lake’s End Grill &Marina on Lake Nantahala. Three of our largest supporters were media outlets, The Macon County News, WNCC 104.1 Radio and WLOS News 13. We couldn’t get the word out about the festival without these three businesses.” So many others continued to lend their support as well, TDC, Snow Hill Inn, Macon Appliance Mart, Appalachian Ace Hardward, Premiere Marketing, Pepsi, Bi-Lo and Ultimate Truck Accessories. In addition to these companies, we appreciate each and every company who donated financially and monetarily to help make this year’s festival so successful. Then there were our volunteers who worked long hours donating their time and energy. We thank you for all you did.”
Mark your calendars now for next year’s 9th Annual Mountain High BBQ Festival & Car Show on August 11 & 12, 2017.
