Blankets of fallen leaves light up the scene along the Cullasaja River

This past week has been the height of the leaf season. Vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows have graced the mountains with their annual show. A big taste of true fall weather blew into the mountains Friday, and with it, brought down a lot of the colorful creations. Within the last couple of days, I set out to photograph the fall colors as they were filling in and really starting to shine. These images are all from those trips, up US 64 towards our favorite waterfalls, and some you may have never seen before. West on US 64, up to Winding Stairs Gap, to watch the sun lean over the tips of the Smoky Mountains and the Blue Ridge Mountains, bringing light to a new day. In case you were unable to get here on time, or perhaps just to reminisce on your own time spent seeking the colors, these images are for you.
