Cullasaja Falls before the leaves return

Cullasaja Falls before the leaves return

In a mere matter of weeks, this view from Hwy 64/Highlands Road, of Cullasaja Falls, will be so very different. Cullasaja Falls is a 200′ cascading waterfall that many folks don’t take the time, or risk, of braving the steep scramble into the gorge below to see.

There is no marked trail, only the “paths” carved out of the side of the mountain due to erosion, that give a semblance of a trail. You have a steep decent, slick and unsteady footing, and numerous rock and root obstacles, that make even a more experienced hiker pay attention to each step. One wrong move, and you can bet the unforgiving rocks and steep grade, will cause you much harm or worse.

For those willing and able to give it a go, there’s a whole new world of exploration and discovery at the base of Cullasaja Falls. Many kayakers will carry their gear down the steep incline, just to put in at the bottom of the falls and navigate their way down the Cullasaja River. It’s a place where you can go to get away from the sounds of life and listen to some of that good old mountain “rock music”.

If you aren’t an experienced hiker, please do not attempt to climb down the erosion trails without the help a more experienced and knowledgeable friend or family member. Safety is key in any hike, and having the proper footwear and gear are essential no matter how far or short any hike may be. The waterfalls and scenic views along the Cullasaja River in the Nantahala National Forest are there for us all to enjoy, but always keep safety first, and if you’re going to head out on your own, be sure to let someone know where you’re going and when you plan to be back.
