The unofficial start of summer is upon us. Memorial Day weekend is the first days of the year that is just getting warm enough to get out and truly start enjoying the spoils of summer. Longer days and higher temperatures have everyone dusting off their swim suits, fueling up the RV, packing the coolers with ice, and making plans for a weekend at their favorite hideaway.
There’s a lot of things happening this weekend in Franklin – one of which is the kickoff to Pickin’ on the Square in downtown Franklin! The free concert starts around 7 PM, with an open mic session leading into the main performers. This weekly free event runs every Saturday evening in front of the Gazebo with vendors of many kinds of treats. So bring a lawn chair and your best toe tappin’ shoes and prepare to listen to some great music!
If you love craft beer thing? If so, Franklin has two of them, one on each end of Main Street. If you’re coming into Franklin off of US 441 from Sylva/Dillsboro – make your way to Currahee Brewing Co. They sit alongside the Little Tennessee River and provides a unique atmosphere to be on the patio enjoying the sounds of the river flowing by. Our other craft brewery is The Lazy Hiker Brewing Co. located at the western end of Main Street. They have weekly entertainment, so you’ll want to make sure you watch the calendar and find your favorite bands. Both breweries have new release parties and announcements often as well.
If you enjoy the great outdoors but don’t want to travel out of town, make your way to the Little Tennessee River Greenway. The 5 mile long paved pathway is a great place to get out and stretch your legs for a sunrise walk, a bike ride, or a run without having to leave Franklin. There are numerous entrances to the Greenway and you can find a map on our website. There is also a dog park at the Big Bear entrance where you can let your K-9 friends off their leash to run around and play.
If you’re ready to get out of town and want to see some of nature’s most magical creations, take a drive east on Highlands Rd/US 64 East and head up waterfall highway. The Cullasaja River Gorge is home of some of Western North Carolina’s most beautiful waterfalls and is a popular North Carolina Scenic Byway. Cullasaja Falls, Bust Your Butt Falls, Dry Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls are all inside the 9 mile stretch of the Cullasaja River Gorge. There are also many stops and pull offs along the way, where you can stop and explore the banks of the Cullasaja River. Take a picnic lunch and make a day of it. Cliffside Lake is also in this section of road. The day use area has a swimming area and a couple of trails that lead you around the lake, as well as Ranger Falls.
