Autumn colors paint the banks of the Cullasaja River – Photo by Eric Haggart

There’s a slight chill in the air today, one that has been missing since the first official day of fall. The leaves have been making their annual transformation from their summer green to their autumn red, orange, and gold. The streets of Franklin are decorated with pumpkins and gourds, bails of hay and stalks of corn. Kids are rushing through the stores, hoping to find their favorite costume in preparation for the fun of “Trick or Treating”.

Pumpkinfest – a Franklin Fall Tradition.

It is also time for one of the most exciting, and entertaining, festivals of the year in Franklin – Pumpkinfest! This Saturday, October 21st, from 9 am to 4 pm, the streets will be lined with vendors & crafters, creators of gifts and traditional Appalachian items, quilts, candles, soaps, and more. Main Street Franklin becomes packed with children in costumes, street entertainers, and food for any taste. The day is full of fun and activities for the whole family. Two Kid’s Zones, The Thimblerig Circus, Mystifying Magic by Howie the Great, Free pony Rides, a Pumpkin Pie eating contest and MORE!

The World Famous Pumpkin Roll!

Then there’s the “Main Event” – the World Famous Pumpkin Roll! Children and adults of all ages vie to see if their pumpkin will roll the furthest in a competition that “pits” family and friends against one another, hoping they have the winning combination of size and strength in their chosen pumpkin. It’s not only fun to try your hand, but it’s an incredibly entertaining event to watch all morning long until the last pumpkin is sent rolling down Town Hill. Registration begins at 9 AM, and if you don’t have a pumpkin, don’t worry, there are plenty on hand for you to buy.
